Dr. K M Cherian

Padmashri Dr. K M Cherian is one of the world's leading cardio thoracic surgeons. He performed India's first successful Coronary Artery Graft, the first internal Mammary Artery Graft, the first Heart Transplant, including the first Paediatric Heart Transplant and the first Heart and Lung Transplant. Till date, he has performed over 26,000 surgeries, with an astonishing success rate. Dr. Cherian was Honorary Surgeon to the President of India for several years. He has held numerous positions in India and abroad. Dr. Cherian founded the Madras Medical Mission at Chennai, Dr K M Cherian is the only one from India selected for the unique honour of having his name inscribed in stone during the recent World Congress conducted by the World Society of Cardio Thoracic Surgeons (WSCTS) earlier this month held on the Island of KOS, Greece. This honour which was bestowed upon 36 stalwarts in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery from all over the world also involved the planting of a tree under each surgeon’s plaque.
This year’s World Congress was held on the Island of KOS which took on a special significance as the stalwarts of cardiothoracic surgery renewed their Hippocratic Oath in the birthplace of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine.
