In Kerala the new year is ushered in with an early morning glimpse of a display called kanni.This is a traditional arrangement of articles like Konna Puvvu ( Cassia fistula), valkannadi (a metal mirror)
seasonal fruits and vegetables, raw rice coconuts broken into halves and used as lamps, golden ornaments silver coins, ashtamangalyam set of items used for pooja, and grantham (plam leaf manuscript) in a traditional vessel called uruli. The kanni is viewed by every member of the family in the light of the nilavilaku the traditional lamp at the break of dawn.This ritual is supposed to bring prosperity and happiness in the New year.
